When the convoy had stopped, Hawk could tell something was wrong. “Something’s not right.”

“Why do you say that?” Ilse asked.

“A feeling.”

“I guess we’ll find out.”

“Not waiting to find out,” he replied taking his body armor off.

“What are you doing?”

“Going for a walk.” He checked his SIG and took spare magazines for it and put them in his pockets.

“Stay here, Jake,” Ilse ordered.

“I’ll be fine. I’ll send you a postcard.”

Before she could respond, he slipped out of the vehicle and into the alley opposite. He followed the alley—if that’s what it was; more a narrow pathway between the structures. From there it turned into a maze of twists and turns. He wasn’t certain of where he was headed, but if he were to ask some questions he’d likely get some answers. Besides, in communities like this, people knew everything about everything.

“Hey, what the fuck are you doing?” a thickset man wearing a stained singlet asked.

“I’m looking for a friend,” Hawk lied.

“He’s not around here, go away before you never leave.”

“What do you know about Medusa?” Hawk asked him. “You ever heard of them?”

The man’s expression changed. “Get out of here, asshole, before I kill you myself.”

The man may have not answered the question verbally, but his reaction told Hawk all he needed to know. He held up his hands placatingly. “All right, I’m going.”

Hawk kept on through the maze. He’d just turned another of the blind corners when his cell buzzed. He didn’t need to look at it to know who it would be. “What do you think you’re doing?”

“I’m not sure yet,” he replied. “When I know, I’ll tell you.”

“Damn it, Jacob,” Anja growled. “You need to get back here. We’ve been given twenty-four hours to get out of the country.”

Hawk stopped. “What about the girl?”

“She’s out of reach.”

He thought of Brussels. “The hell she is. We’ve come this far; I’m not leaving her behind.”

“This isn’t Brussels, Jake.”

“You’re right about that. This time I get the girl out alive.”

There was a long silence as Anja contemplated her next words. “All right, Jake. Stay out of trouble. I’m going to send you some coordinates. You need to be there before dark.”

“What happens then?”

“The auction starts.”

“I’ll be there.”

“We can’t help you, Jake. You’re on your own.”

“I work better alone,” he replied and disconnected the call.
